Alabama Death Records by City
Death records in Alabama are filed and maintained at the county level, not by individual cities. When you need a death certificate for someone who lived in or died in an Alabama city, you will request it through that city's county health department. This page lists major Alabama cities and shows which county office handles death records for each location.

How Cities and Counties Work Together
Alabama cities do not maintain their own vital records offices. Instead, the county health department serves all cities and towns within its borders. For example, if you need a death certificate for someone who died in Birmingham, you would contact the Jefferson County Department of Health. If the death occurred in Huntsville, you would go to the Madison County Health Department.
The good news is that any Alabama county health department can issue a death certificate for a death that occurred anywhere in the state. All 67 county offices connect to the same statewide ViSION database. So even if you live in Mobile but need a death certificate for someone who died in Montgomery, your local Mobile County Health Department can help you.
